Google has recently been placing a lot of emphasis on the ‘Quality and Trust’ element of ranking a website and a recent announcement seems to endorse this fact that they are looking to create a more secure web.
As of January 2017 Google is going to start marking sites where Passwords or Credit Card information is entered as non-secure if it's being served over HTTP. The simple solution to this is to add a SSL certificate to your website meaning that you will have a HTTPS connection and your website can be seen as secure by Google.
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (always shortened to HTTPS for obvious reasons!) is useful for sites that collect and transmit personal information. Banks, e-commerce sites and even social networks will need to have HTTPS in place to make sure their user’s sensitive information is protected.
There is absolutely no requirement for you to have an SSL certificate on your website but we just felt it was our duty to let you know that websites with the certificate will be favoured in 2017 by Google, and probably all Search Engines. Going forward we believe that from 2018 an SSL Certificate will become a standard practice.
Compared to the risks, and potential loss of search engine ratings, an SSL certificates is not a huge expense and can easily be applied to your website, the license for a certificate for 3 years is only £99.00 +VAT.
There will be a small amount of chargeable time, typically one hour, for this to be added to every page of your website. So if you would like to talk to us about adding an SSL Certificate to your site just get in touch.
