Well, we did it, and not a singed toe in sight!
On Friday, Phil, Andrew, Josh and I took part in the St Teresa’s Charity Firewalk at the Model T in Darlington.
It’s safe to say excitement (and nerves) were running high on the night which started with a training session by the team at Blaze. The session was to help us get in the right frame of mind to take on the challenge. The training session was filled with lots of interesting information including an explanation of the science behind firewalking as well as a confidence building exercise that saw us whooping and cheering for our fellow walkers like an audience on Jerry Springer. Andrew was so enthusiastic in this task he ended up losing his voice!
Before the firewalk we were led outside to see the walk being lit. This was a very sobering moment when the flames began to leap, and the crowd gathered ahead of the big moment. The walk was 20ft long and burned at temperatures over 580°C, something that the Blaze team were keen to emphasise during the learn or burn session!
There were around 20 walkers in total and we all lined up ready to take the first daring step. After completing the walk each of the Purple team remarked that the wait in bare foot on the cold concrete carpark had been more uncomfortable than the walk itself and a couple of us even went on to make the walk again.
The event was great fun and helped raise lots of money for St Teresa’s Hospice, a charity that we are proud to be registered corporate sponsors of. With your help we raised an amazing £795 and we couldn’t be prouder.
