Mimecast email security

With cyber threats on the rise, even the most cautious users can fall victim to phishing. Discover how Mimecast’s powerful, affordable protection for Microsoft 365 can help small businesses stay ahead of cyber threats, with minimal disruption and maximum peace of mind.

As many of you will know, we have been reselling Microsoft and Google products for quite a few years now, and we are continually looking for more opportunities and products that align with our clients’ needs as well as our own.

Through our Microsoft supplier, we have access to their partners, so that we can easily add different products and still get a high level of support and training, which allows us to give our clients choices that they may not otherwise have access to.

Earlier this year, a client of ours who has both a Website and Email with us had an issue where a user clicked on a link in a phishing email, which caused strange behaviour on their emails.

Thankfully, it was not malicious, more an annoyance, but we had to spend time investigating and resolving it - and it could have been a lot worse.

Somewhere between 75% - 95% of cyber attacks are triggered by human interaction, so having an automated solution for email is a great addition to a business's defences against attack.

We looked at a few options for email security and decided on Mimecast. It is low cost, high protection, and relatively simple to implement. All of which sounds good for small businesses!

We implemented the Email Security Cloud Integrated product for this particular client, which integrates directly with their Microsoft 365 (M365) tenant and scans emails looking for threats in the background so users don’t notice any change.

This particular Mimecast product is specifically designed for M365 and offers a very cost-effective solution for small businesses. It is priced at £3.50 + vat per month per user (you need a license for each user account with an email in your M365 tenant), so for small teams it gives a lot of value for money.

Though the implementation doesn’t take long, the process as a whole takes a while. Once it’s in place it is configured in “Monitor” mode for 10 - 14 days. It uses machine learning, threat intelligence and AI processes to identify what is normal traffic for your systems and what can be blocked.

Any detections are emailed to the admin and in this initial period you can decide what action to take on individual occurrences. Mimecast will then use this to either allow or block similar emails in the future.

Of course, there are some emails which contain common phishing/malware content and these will be picked up without any intervention from the admins.

As an account admin, you have access to a control panel which has detailed reports of both historic and real-time data, so you can see at a glance any threats.

After the initial monitor period is over, it is updated to “Protect” mode and that’s when your email policies come into action and are physically protecting you from cyber attacks. There is also Post Delivery Protection so that if there are delayed or stealth threats, these will be removed automatically from the inbox.

There are default policies that can be used to get you started, but these can be added to / changed so that they meet your particular needs of what action to take depending on the situation.

It also has Data Loss Prevention (DLP) on outgoing emails to prevent sensitive information from being leaked. Again, this is in real time with no impact to the users.

In this world of ever-evolving Cyber Threats, this is a cost effective, scalable, flexible and always up to date email security solution to protect your email and business.
