The magic of a morning walk

One of the simplest things I’ve built into my routine recently has made a bigger difference than I expected; every workday, before my alarm goes off I get up, get out, and walk 2–3 miles. No pressure, no distance targets or time goals, just moving.

The magic behind walking

✨ It clears my head before the "what do I have to do today?" kicks in
✨ It wakes my body up properly (so I’m not trying to 'ease into' the day at my desk)
✨ It gives me uninterrupted thinking space and ideas seem to come more easily when I’m walking
✨ It helps put things into perspective before the day gathers pace
✨ It sets a positive tone that carries through everything that follows

There’s also something about being up that bit earlier, when everything is quieter. It feels calmer, less rushed, and a lot more intentional. By the time I sit down to start work, I feel more focused, more energised, and far more in control of the day ahead. It’s not complicated, and it doesn’t need to be perfect. Some mornings feel easier than others but just showing up and getting out the door is the win.

Like a lot of wellbeing habits, consistency is where the impact really builds. If you’ve ever thought about getting out for an early walk, even once or twice a week, I’d really recommend giving it a try. Just a pair of trainers, a bit of fresh air, and some time to yourself. Sometimes it’s the small, steady habits that make the biggest difference. 💜

Now for the science! 🧪

Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. Whatever your age, there's strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life.

Short on time?

To stay healthy, the UK Chief Medical Officers' Physical Activity Guidelines state that adults should try to be active every day and aim to do at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week, through a variety of activities. To put this into context, my 3 miles every morning takes me 45 mins - multiply this by 5 days and I have already done 225 minutes. If I were to cut this to 2 miles, it would take me 30 minutes, which over a 5 days period equates to the 150 minutes target.
