Adding some festive sparkle to your website: Tips for standout Christmas content

We understand that every year it feels like Christmas starts earlier and earlier, you might even have let out a groan when you saw the title of this post… But in a year that has challenged even the most resilient spirit, we couldn’t be happier to be talking all things festive and bright and share how you can spread that cheer on your website!

So when should you start promoting Christmas on your website? How can you add Christmas magic to your website? And most importantly, why should you take the time to do it?

When should I start promoting Christmas on my website?

Let’s start at the beginning, when is it right to launch your Christmas content? This is a question with many answers as it largely depends on your audience. If you are a retailer, Christmas can start as early as the first week of October, even before big celebrations like Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Research suggests that as much as 40% of gift-givers will start their shopping before Halloween, so if you have products perfect for presents, you might want to start thinking sooner rather than later for your festive promotions.

If your company is Business2Business, you can still get involved in the fun, but you might want to save the sparkle for the end of November.

How can I make my website feel festive?

There are lots of ways you can add Christmas cheer to your website. Simple but effective additions like some animated snow or snowflakes add a whimsical touch to your website. Or why not add a Christmas version of your logo? Over the years we have seen some fantastic examples, including a few from our clients, for who we’ve found inventive ways to ‘Christmasiffy’ (that’s a word, right?) their logos. Check out these examples from The Gluten Free Kitchen and Wensleydale Glamping for some inspiration.

But it’s not just Christmassy touches like snowflakes and logos that can make your website feel more in keeping with the holiday season. If you have imagery that feels more reflective of the time of year, make sure you add this to key areas of your site like your home page banner or key landing pages, or why not try posting Christmas updates on your blog? We understand that this year we all might have to celebrate our Christmas parties a little differently, but we can still share our enthusiasm for Christmas with our readers.

If you manage an online shop, you might also want to look at providing shoppers with Christmas coupons, shoppers love a discount and there is no better time to offer that than the follow up to Christmas with key calendar dates like Black Friday. With any discount codes you will want to make sure it has prime visibility on your site to really maximise the promotion, not to mention sharing across your social media platforms.

Why should I add Christmas content to my website?

One of the biggest reasons to add Christmas content is to create an engaging online experience for your customers and add some personality to your brand. People love fresh content and Google does too, with the search engine favouring websites that are regularly updated with relevant and topical content.
