In February we told you that we’d be running a monthly Jargon Buster to help you to understand some of our techy lingo.
Last month we explained Content Management Systems (CMS), and this month it’s the turn of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) or as it should be termed these days – Web Content Optimisation.
Web Content Optimisation (WCO), in a nutshell, is the process that people who develop and maintain websites go through of optimising a website to affect its organic rankings in a search engine.
Whilst there is sadly no secret trick to ensure you come out at the top of search results, there are lots of things that be done to help improve your position. Making regular changes to your website can have a big impact on your ranking although they must be relevant and in context for what you do or provide as a service.
Search Engines, such as Google, change their search algorithms frequently and so it is important that your website is adjusted accordingly.
We often hear tales where businesses are approached by companies who ‘claim’ they can get you on to page one of Google and even into the top position and you should be very suspicious of anyone who guarantees that they can get your site to the top – they can’t.
A great way to help your rankings is to ensure that the search engines can tell that your site is active, that you regularly use it and keep it up-to-date. If you make good use of your social media, write regular and interesting news posts and encourage other sites to link back to yours, you will certainly be helping your site to improve its position in search engine rankings.
You really want to try to have the best rankings possible; the closer you are to the top of search results, the higher the chance will be that people will click through to your site and interact with you.
Sometimes you have better things to do with your time so if this all seems a bit too much then maybe we can help whether it’s a website we have developed or by a third party.
