When browsing the BBC news with my morning brew, I was delighted to read that Google are now changing their algorithms to penalise those pesky pop ups.
We have been talking some of our clients out of pop up advertising for years, we truly believe that making users click on something to close it is putting a gigantic great barrier in front of all your lovely content that you worked so hard to produce! I know myself that as soon as I see a pop up I just want to leave the site. You wouldn’t stand next to someone waving a sheet of paper under their nose asking for an email address if they were shopping in your store, so why do it online?
The change has come into place as a lot of web users are now using ad-blocking software to stop the pesky pop ups, however these blockers also block static adverts that are sat on a web page not jumping around in front of your face. Blocking these static ads are damaging Google’s revenue scheme and they have decided enough is enough!
There are some exceptions to this rule however, pop ups telling web users about cookies (not the chocolate kind) are still allowed. This change doesn’t come into force until the 10th January so if you have pop ups on your site, now is the time to get rid of them…for good!
