1. Quality is Key
When it comes to writing your page content Google, and user’s, are looking for quality and originality. Copying the text from another site too closely can be harmful to your rankings and is likely to turn visitors of your site off.
2. Make Your First 100 Words Count
As well as making sure that your content is fresh and original you should also make sure it is well thought through. The first 100 words of your page content is weighted highly by Google so you should aim to use as many of your keywords as you can whilst still making sure it reads well.
3. Work on Your Links
Links in your content, both internal (to pages on your own site) and external (links to other sites) is another key thing to include in your content as it helps Google to build up a picture of what your business or service is. It is also a good way to encourage people to click around your site and should have a positive effect on your bounce rate and build all important backlinks.
4. Consider How People Use Search Engines
Another thing to consider when writing your content is ‘local searches’ and mobile searches. The way people search online has changed, many people now use mobile functions such as ‘OK Google’ and ‘Siri’ to carry out a search by asking questions. They may for instance ask something like ‘Where can I get a coffee near me?’. If you are a coffee shop you want to be targeting these people. Not only are they looking for the service you provide, they are looking for it right now and are close enough by that there is a strong chance that if you appear in the results they will choose to visit you! One way you can help do this is by including your location within your content. You could for instance say something like,
“We are a cosy coffee shop set in the picturesque town of Richmond, North Yorkshire serving rich coffee blends and delicious cakes to go with them!”
In one short sentence you have let Google know where you are and what you are offering, and not only that, you have let potential customers know too.
5. Include Keywords in Your Headings
Our last top tip is to make good use of the headings on your page. Your H1 title is the main heading on the page and the first thing Google reads. For this reason it makes good sense to use this as an opportunity to target more of your keywords. Smaller headings on the page shouldn’t be ignored though. As well as making it clearer to Google just what your page is about it also makes it easier for users to digest your page, and hopefully spend longer reading the content you have worked so hard to create!
