Unless you’ve had your head amongst them, you should by now have heard of the cloud. But if you’re still confused about what exactly the cloud is; don’t panic. That’s where we come in (mum, I hope you’re reading this).
The cloud simply refers to software, services and data stored and run online rather than on a local, physical hard drive. Hence ‘the cloud’ metaphor, as all this is stored ‘above’ your physical storage.
The analogy is rather apt given that we’re not quite sure just how big the cloud is. Rough estimates puts the amount of available storage at around 1 Exabyte, which take it from us, is an awful lot of space!
There are so many advantages of using the cloud, not least you can access all your documents, photos, programs, games – whatever – on any device with an internet connection. Now if you started watching an episode of Narcos on Netflix on your lunch break (like a certain Purple person), but didn’t finish. It’s because of the cloud that you can resume from where you left off at home, on a separate device.
Now whilst this is useful for personal browsing (and avid Narcos fans), this can have quite a big impact on your business. It negates, to an extent, the need for buying extra hardware for storage, which is susceptible to degradation over time. With the cloud, you can have access to a vast amount of online storage and only pay for what you use. This means that the cloud is completely scalable to your needs.
